To Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights DGH is Sponsoring a Poetry Contest


Theme - All entries should explore the theme of DGH's mission, Promoting health and human rights with those who have difficulty making their voices heard.

Submissions - For each entry, submit one original with your name, age, course of study or job/profession, address and (optional) telephone and e-mail address, as well as seven copies with no identification. Mail entries to the address below. All submissions must be received by October 16, 1998. Winners will be notified November 16, 1998.

Prizes - First prize (1): Round-trip airfare and basic living expenses for up to two months for the winner's choice of either: a) Intensive Spanish study in Centro del Estudio de Español "Pop Wuj" in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala; or b) Volunteering with "Médicos por El Derecho a La Salud" (MDS, Doctors for the Right to Health) in rural Morazán, El Salvador. Second prizes (3): Copy of Where There Is No Doctor, by David Werner, and one of each of the Third and Fourth prizes. Third prizes (5): Compact disk or cassette (your choice) by Sol y Canto. Fourth prizes (5): Cassette of Heroica Morazán by Los Torogoces de Morazán.

Publication - By submitting an entry you agree to give DGH first publication rights should the poem win a prize.

Rules - Entry is open to all persons without restriction. Students are especially welcome to enter. There is a limit of 11 entries per person. Each entry must be in English, submitted separately and no longer than 3 pages (entries submitted in Spanish or French will be entered in separate contests with different rules held in El Salvador and France). Entries must be original, written by the person submitting them and must have never been published, submitted for publication or entered in another contest. DGH cannot return submissions or be held responsible for their loss.
