Doctors for Global Health is pleased to invite you to the 11th Annual DGH General Assembly. This participatory event is an opportunity to come together and meet others working to advance health and human rights. It's a time to learn, support one another, have fun and re-energize yourself to continue working for social justice around the world. The program includes keynote speakers; panel discussions and workshops about current issues facing the United States, an overview of Doctors for Global Health's current activities and social/networking time. Topics to be covered include the struggle for health care for all in the U.S., globalization and the plight of immigrants. Please join us!

Special Guest Speakers:

Ross C. "Rocky" Anderson is currently the Mayor of Salt Lake City. His is an attorney who has volunteered for many social justice issues. Anderson believes strongly in the value of diversity, promoting greater dialogue, understanding, and inclusiveness among people of different faiths, ages, genders, sexual orientations, races, economic circumstances and ethnic origins. Anderson adheres to a philosophy of "practical environmentalism," taking steps that preserve our environment for the future, while enhancing our economy and quality of life now. His Salt Lake City Green program is perhaps the most comprehensive environmental program in the nation. Anderson has received national recognition for several initiatives, including an award from the US Conference of Mayors for his pedestrian safety initiative, "Reclaiming the Streets." Anderson has also received recognition from the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives for his leadership on global warming issues. For his environmental initiatives, the Sierra Club named Anderson "2002 Utah Political Leader of the Year." Issues 2002, a nonprofit advocacy group that speaks on behalf of the homeless and the economically disadvantaged, also named Anderson "Elected Official of the Year" for 2002.

Norma Price, MD, is a retired physician who moved to Tucson in 1998 and, in her own words, "has been a desert rat ever since." She has been a volunteer with the Samaritans since its inception in 2002. Samaritans is a grassroots organization that was formed to address the rising number of migrant deaths due to crossing in the fierce Arizona desert. Medical personnel roam the desert in Jeeps and vans, looking for stranded migrants, to whom they offer food, water and medical help. "It's about saving lives," Price said, "but even if you haven't saved a life, if you've helped make their day better, relieved their anxiety, their hunger, their thirst, that's rewarding. Even if at the time it wasn't a life-saving issue. Of course our primary mission is to save lives but it isn't always that dramatic. Sometimes it's just giving water to the person." She also volunteers with No More Deaths and is a volunteer physician at Casa San Juan, a free clinic that operates twice monthly to provide needed medical care to undocumented immigrants and other disenfranchised folks. Originally from Georgia, Dr. Price received her medical training at the University of Tennessee Medical School. She was a fellow at the Department of Developmental Therapeutics, M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute, Houston, TX, completed an Oncology Fellowship at Emory University and received a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru.
