As members of Doctors for Global Health, which has accompanied the Community of Santa Marta for more than 20 years, we stand on the side of the 5 Water Defenders, as they are facing arrest, detention and violation of their human rights. The stated reason for their persecution is fictitious and does not justify their arrest and their detention, with no access to their families and lawyers. They are accused of a crime committed during the Civil War and belonging to illicit organizations at that time and now. This comes into sharp contrast to the lack of action to bring to justice those responsible for many massacres committed during the Civil War. We have committed to let people know what is really going on, to reach out to our Elected Representatives to have them withdraw all support to the Military and Police and to raise money to support the community in their many needs to fight back (legal fees, transport, food, printing, etc.). “As you know, on January 11, Salvadoran police arrested five prominent water and human rights defenders from the community of Santa Marta in northern El Salvador: Miguel Ángel Gámez, Alejandro Laínez García, Pedro Antonio Rivas Laínez, Antonio Pacheco, and Saúl Agustín Rivas Ortega. The arrests have generated widespread international opposition, including an international statement signed by over 250 organizations in 29 countries, including your own, and show the crude reality of life under dictatorship in El Salvador today. Given your concern for this situation, we are writing with another urgent call to solidarity and to ask that you and/or your organization DONATE to support the legal and other expenses of the El Salvador 5. For organizations in other counties, see below for how to donate via PayPal and other options. — Background – Community organizations in Santa Marta and throughout Cabañas were at the forefront of the successful fight to pass, in 2017, the first law in the world that prohibits metallic mining. Without evidence, the government has accused these individuals of involvement with a murder that occurred over 30 years ago in the context of the civil war, though the government has taken no action to pursue charges against those who committed massacres and other crimes against humanity against the community of Santa Marta. Read a translation of the community’s statement here. With these arrests, the Bukele government is trying to make the social movements in El Salvador cower into submission, and, environmental defenders fear, pave the way toward reversing the mining ban.  We cannot let that happen. The community is strong and has widespread support across the social movement in El Salvador. But there is an urgent need for financial support to fight for their immediate release, and to ensure that the community can continue their critical organizing work.
