Where Does DGH
Get Its Funding?
DGH's funding comes mostly from individual donors that support our mission and goals. Some donate for work in a particular country, others support DGH in general. This general support is particularly appreciated as it allows DGH as an organization to continue making the work with the communities possible. It also allows DGH to allocate funds as needed among all its projects.

DGH is also supported by private foundations, such as Atkinson Foundation and Mulago Foundation. DGH does not seek US Government funds, such as from U.S.A.I.D., which allows much more independence in our program decisions. For the same reason, we do not allow more than fifty percent of our funding to come from any one source.

DGH is very frugal with its funds. Board members and international volunteers pay all their own expenses, including airfare, and room and board. These in-kind contributions, which totaled more than $20,000 last year (not included in revenues), have allowed 95 percent of DGH funds to go directly to its program activities.

In 2000, the IRS officially awarded DGH permanent 501(c)3 non-profit status after the obligatory five-year probation period. If you would like to support our work, your tax-deductible donation would be much appreciated and, since DGH has very low administrative costs (see question number 10 on the DGH FAQ), goes a long way.

Put Six Degrees to Work on Your Web Site or Blog

Do you have a blog or web site? Add a personalized badge from www.sixdegrees.org that lets you support the causes close to your heart, like DGH.

You've probably heard of the Six Degrees concept. Any one person is connected to any other person through six or fewer relationships, because it's a small world. SixDegrees.org is about using this idea to accomplish something good.

Use Mission Fish with Your Online Auctions
If you enjoy selling items on eBay, please consider supporting DGH at the same time. You can donate 10-100% of the proceeds at the time of sale to DGH projects and programs through www.missionfish.org.

Save the Environment and Give to DGH at the Same Time: Donate Your Used Cell Phone
About 130 million cell phones are retired annually in the US. And because of their small size they are more likely to be thrown in the trash and ultimately pose threats to the environment and public health. Donate your old cell phone to make sure it is disposed of properly and the value of the cell phone will be donated to DGH in your name.

Donate Stock
Contributions to DGH are deductible on your 1040 and on state income tax returns. How much that amounts to depends on your tax rate. For example, if the combined federal and state rate at which your income is taxed is 40 percent then 40 cents of every dollar you give to DGH is money that you would otherwise be paying to federal and state governments as taxes.

The deduction allowed for gifts of an appreciated security (stock) can be much higher because it is usually the fair market value at the time it is donated, not at the time it was bought. Let's say you paid $5,000 for 100 shares of stock and that stock is now worth $7,500. If you cash it in, you'll have to pay capital gains tax on the $2,500 dollars the stock went up (28% of $2,500 = $700). But, if you give the stock to DGH, you can deduct the full $7,500 from your taxes without paying any capital gains tax.
